The article highlights methods to comply with MSHA Title 30 CFR and outlines proper pinch point guarding methods and guard designs: “MSHA compliant pinch point guarding for return rolls is currently at a level of importance never before seen in the industry. Although the MSHA Guide to Equipment Guarding and MSHA Title 30 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) have been around for some time the requirement to guard return rolls was not widely enforced until just recently.”

WST or Wide Slot Take-Up
|
January 11, 2010 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Douglas releases 2 innovative and cost-effective take-up designs: the LDT or Light Duty Top Mount Take-Up and the WST or Wide Slot Side Mount Take-Up.
The LDT or Light Duty Top Mount Take-Up has a similar design to the Douglas HDT Heavy Duty Top Mount Take-Ups that Douglas has manufactured for more than 25 years. The LDT is simply a lighter duty version for smaller bearing sizes and is more economical on the front end than the HDT model. The Douglas LDT is a direct interchange for other
manufacturer’s products of the same class. The LDT can be manufactured to fit a variety of pillow block ball bearing styles in 2 bolt patterns as required by the customer (some type E 2-bolts may also be accommodated). The largest shaft size that can be used on an LDT take-up is 3-1/2”.
The WST or Wide Slot Take-Up has a similar design to the WSTU take-up and match the mounting holes and centers exactly. This take-up can use a variety of bearings but was designed around the SC Normal Duty Wide Slot Bearings. The largest shaft size that can be used on an WST take-up is 2-15/16”.
The Douglas Take-Up line includes the following styles of take-ups available from stock or with industry leading lead times as noted:

- Patented slotted steel heavy gauge mounting bracket retrofits to most return rolls without the need to remove the drop brackets.
- Compatible with CEMA B, C, D & E idlers 4”, 5”, 6” & 7” diameter rolls with 1-1/2” and 4-1/2” drop brackets.
- Retrofits to most CEMA return idler bolt patterns.
- Complete with four safety warning labels.
- Single piece lightweight roller cage is economical to ship and easy to install.
Complies with MSHA Title 30 CFR
- 56.14110 Flying or Falling Material
- 56.14112 Guard Construction
- 56.14107 Moving Machine Parts
- 75.1722 Mechanical Equipment Guards
- 77.400 Mechanical Equipment Guards
Meets OSHA requirements 1910.219 for mechanical power - transmission apparatus and 56.14107 for moving machine parts

The end shield is snapped securely in place using the provided hanging brackets and integrated mounting system.
Easy Maintenance
The Guardian³ requires little to no maintenance due to its unique, trouble free design. The new wider self cleaning slots in the bottom of the guard help with self-cleaning ability and the deep reservoir design means less frequent cleaning if material build-up occurs. Clean out is a snap. Simply remove the fast action pins and allow the Guardian³ to open to the cleaning position. The side shield is designed with multiple viewing ports and a single large maintenance port to allow for greasing of idlers if needed.

Douglas® Manufacturing defies conventional thought with the introduction of the Negotiator™ Self Aligning Return Roll an innovative concept in self aligning return roll design. The cutting edge design is for the most difficult belt training applications where convention self aligning idlers have not been able to help with belt tracking. The Negotiator™ design offers the following design improvements:
- Unique flat roller design helps center the belt better than conventional rolls
- Self cleaning frame design helps to prevent material build up by shedding carry-back from the return side of the belt
- Three roll design offers a support bed that cradles the belt and more efficiently reacts to the pressure of the side guide rolls
- Rubber discs help to shed material and prevent material build up on the rolls
- Can be used for bi-directional belts
- UHMW side guide rolls have the lowest possible coefficient of friction and help to prevent belt damage in applications where the belt consistently tracks off to one side
- Lower profile design is ideal for those tight to fit applications
- The mounting brackets are vertically adjustable ± 1” providing an additional tracking aid. This adjustment can safely be made while the conveyor is running

Jeff Carlisle, Regional Manager for Douglas Manufacturing, Serves in Operation Iraqi Freedom
 |
SSG Jeff Carlisle on Patrol in Iraq in his new “company” car.
|
Jeff Carlisle, Regional Sales Manager for Douglas Manufacturing and a member of the Alabama Army National Guard, deployed to the Middle East in early October to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Jeff traded in his business cards for dog tags and his Ford Taurus for his up- armored Humvee and assumed his new position as Staff Sergeant of the 167th Infantry Battalion. His new job is to provide convoy security in Iraq to help ensure the success of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 1991, while serving in the 1st Cavalry Division of the U.S. Army Jeff was sent to Kuwait to serve in Operation Desert Shield. He spent several months in Kuwait and returned home after the situation in the region had stabilized as a result of the U.S. led intervention there.
In September 2001 Jeff’s unit was activated in response to the 911 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon. Two days after he got the call his unit left and provided vital domestic security for more than a year.
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, Jeff’s unit was activated again and he deployed to the Gulf Coast region to aid with the recovery efforts.
On this current occasion Jeff left behind his wife and two small children whom we know he misses very much.
Jeff has answered his country’s call to service four times and, like thousands of other dedicated Americans, protects our freedom while trying to help stabilize and rebuild Iraq to provide a better future for everyone.
We ask that you pray for the success of Jeff’s mission and for his safe and swift return home to his family.
